Chapter 16

“You lied!” I say to Ronald.

“It wasn’t me, I swear it. I would never go against my wife’s wishes.”

Adriel lifts me into his arms. “The girl betrayed us.”

Runner’s sister is a traitor. If humans have an afterlife from which they can witness the actions of their living relatives, I hope Runner shuts his eyes and never opens them again.

Ghost enters the room and glides to me. “I can take you to the hybrid camp, but you need to be quick. The soldiers are only minutes away from swarming this place.”

“Is the girl with them?” I ask.

“She’s dead. A hybrid sunk his teeth into her neck and relieved her of her life,” Ghost says.

Perhaps she will find tranquility in the next world. I am saddened that her life ended the way it did but I will not mourn a traitor.

Ronald closes the bedroom door and stands in front of it. “You can’t leave. They will find you, and rip you apart.”

“Get out of the way!” Adriel says.

Ronald widens his stance and extends his arms out to block us from passing. “I can help you. But you need to trust me.”

“If you don’t move, I will invade your body,” Ghost says.

Ronald sighs deeply. “Listen to me. There is a secret basement with a tunnel that leads to the river. From there, you can travel to the hybrid camp under the cloak of darkness.”

“If this is a trap, I will find you and torture you until you stop breathing,” I say.

“I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing it for my wife. And because of her, you can trust that I’m leading you to safety and not a trap.”

“Let’s go!” Adriel says.

Ghost, Adriel and I follow Ronald into a squeaky, shadowy corridor.

I meant it when I told Ronald I would torture him if he entraps us. I am fae and we are not known for our compassion.

The fae are fair and just but when we are crossed or insulted, we are a force to be reckoned with and our history is filled with vengeful acts against humans who have dared to test our nature.

I am more afraid of my own kind than I am of a hybrid soldier.

We reach a staircase and race down the steps, landing in the foyer.

Outside, I hear the voices of enraged hybrids.

“Woman, where are you hiding them?”

“They were here but they left,” the woman says.

“It’s my wife,” Ronald whispers.

“Where did they go?” a hybrid asks.

“Into the woods,” Ronald’s wife says.

“How long ago?”

“Hours,” she says.

“Do you value your life?”

Silence.

“They are going to kill her. I can’t let that happen,” Ronald says.

“Ghost, can you help her?” I ask.

“I can only possess one being at a time. If I invade one of the hybrids, I may be able to give her enough time to run but the others will pounce her before she gets too far and when they do, they will drain her and leave her for the wild animals to finish her off.”

“Put me down,” I say to Adriel.
